"These photos show us someone who reads the landscape intimately and understands in very profound ways what nature is about."

Peter Garrett - from 2006 exhibition opening speech.

Richard Morecroft is perhaps best known for his work in broadcasting, particularly as the anchor of the ABC TV News, and more recently as the host of wildlife documentaries. In his private time though, Richard has been committed to photography and painting which reflect his fascination with the natural environment.

In 1990, Richard began to develop a vertical format for photographic presentation in an attempt to explore a complete cross-section of landscape elements, from detail to distance. He has refined this approach over the years to produce the types of images in this exhibition – images which incorporate the tiniest elements of closely-observed texture, structure and pattern, through to the larger vista beyond.

Landscape has tended to be regarded – in both language and format – as the broadly horizontal, the general, the more distant wide-ranging view. Richard’s images invite the viewer to observe the landscape by starting with the specific and expanding to the general. The constantly maintained focus throughout the images emphasises the sense of connection and interdependence between every component.

These photographs celebrate a vision of the environment where every element, large and small, is recognised as significant and where the recurring patterns of the natural world are a constant source of inspiration
